The tennis competition at the Paris Olympics has lost two of its hopefuls, the Italian Jannik Sinner and the Danish Holger Rune. In both cases it has been for health reasons: Sinner for tonsillitis and Rune for an injury to the thumb. The Olympic Tennis Games are held at the legendary Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday, the day after the opening ceremony.

Men's number-one tennis player Jannik Sinner retired from the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, days before it started, after suffering from tonsillitis. 

The young Italian began to feel sick on Monday after a week of training in Monaco, until The Italian said he was "sad and disappointed" to quit, and added that he began feeling sick Monday following a week's training in monaco, and after waiting to see if he was improving, finally his medical team advised him to retire to be able to restore his health.



Sinner was to compete in both singles and doubles with Lorenzo Musetti, Wimbledon Musetti's semi-finalist who will now have to play with Luciano Darderi or Matteo Arnaldi. Italian media that Andrea Vavassori, ranked 207th in the world, will replace Sinner in the men's singles.

"I was eager to compete with my teammates and the rest of the Italian team, but for now that will have to wait," Sinner explained, who is "sad and disappointed" for not being able to meet what had been one of his great goals of the season, and wishes his teammates the best.

The disappointment goes beyond him, as his presence placed his country with many chances of winning medals: Sinner won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open earlier this year and then became the first Italian to head the world charts after his recent semi-final race at the French Open.

Sinner retired from the Madrid Open before the quarterfinals with a hip injury and lost the tournament in Rome in the Roland Garros race, where Olympic tennis will be played between July 27 and August 4.

Turning pro at the age of 16 in 2019, he played his first almost full season on the ATP circuit and climbed more than 450 places in the world rankings to reach the top 80 (78th), making him the youngest player to be that high at the end of the year since Nadal in 2003.

On the other hand, the Danish Holgar Rune was number four in the world. Although this season has not done so well and fell to place 16 in the ranking.
