The Algerian middle-distance runner Djamel Sedjati arrives at the Games with two clear objectives for the 800-metre event: to win a medal for his country, which did not reach the podium in Tokyo 2020, and to break David Rudisha's world record. The athlete will make his debut in Paris on 7 August.

Following the success achieved for Algeria by the runner Taoufik Makhloufi in London 2012, where he won gold in the 1500 metres, and in Rio 2016, where he earned two silver medals, Algerian athletics has been without victories during the last Games. The disappointment felt at that time can now be redeemed with Sedjati's performance, as he aims to continue the strong Olympic history his country has always had in middle-distance running.

Sedjati has demonstrated an impressive form this season. In the Paris Diamond League, he broke the national record with a time of 1:41.56, placing him as the third fastest athlete in history over the 800-metre distance, behind Rudisha (1:40.91) and Denmark's Wilson Kipketer (1:41.11). Not content with this achievement, the athlete improved his mark at the Monaco Diamond League, setting a new tournament record with a time of 1:41.46, the best of the year globally.

"Now I'm thinking about the world record. I hope to achieve it at the Olympic Games," said the runner, who has already confirmed his potential by winning the silver medal at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene. "I will focus on that goal and put in all the necessary effort to achieve it. I've worked very hard to get here, and I hope that work will be reflected in my performances."

In addition to his brilliance in the 800 metres, Sedjati has also set a new world record in the 1000 metres with a time of 2:13.97 in Johannesburg. His preparation for Paris has also benefited from the experience of his coach, Ammar Benida Merah, who was also instrumental in the Olympic career of the middle-distance runner's wife, Nouria Benida Merah, who won gold in Sydney 2000.

The journey to the major event in Paris has special significance for Sedjati, as he tested positive for Covid-19 in Tokyo and faced the frustration of a quarantine that prevented him from competing. His return to the Olympic Games represents an opportunity for redemption and a monumental challenge. "My mindset right now is that the hard work I have put in will pay off," said the athlete.

Algeria, which made its Olympic debut in 1964, has won a total of nine medals in athletics, including four golds, with notable athletes such as Nouria Benida Merah (1500 metres, in 2000), Noureddine Morceli (1500 metres, in 1996) and Hassiba Boulmerka (1500 metres, in 1992). Sedjati is confident of revitalising this Olympic legacy and reaching new heights in international athletics.
