China’s Long Daoyi and Wang Zongyuan took first place in the men’s synchronised 3m springboard with 446.10 points. The reigning two-time world champions add yet another gold to their collection, winning with a whopping 95.76 on their last dive: a forward 4½ somersaults.

Juan Manuel Celaya and Osmar Olvera Ibarra of Mexico grabbed silver, scoring 444.03 and Great Britain’s Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher with a 438.15 for the bronze.

In a dramatic diving battle, heavy favourites China looked like they were just barely able to hold off the Mexican pair, who won the first-ever medal for Mexico in the event. Even Team GB staked its claim with an impressive opening effort, executing a back dive in the pike position with brilliance to give them the joint-third highest score of the first round with 49.80, tying them with Team USA’s Tyler Downs and Greg Duncan.

Tables turned in round four, as Mexico had put together consecutive scores worth 82.62 and 85.68 to surge into the lead, overtaking China and knocking GB down to third. Wang and Long trailed after the fourth of six dives and rallied on the final two dives. Celaya and Olvera gave their all in their sixth and final dive, a forward 2½ somersaults with 3 twists, but the 94.77 was not enough to prevent the Chinese team from taking the crown.

Wang and Long claimed the fourth Paris gold of the Chinese diving team, with defending champion Wang retaining his title in the title event. His then-partner, Xie Siyi, will only compete in the individual event this time around.

Laugher, who won Britain's first medal in the event along with Chris Mears in Rio, claimed his fourth Olympic medal with the podium finish.

Diving resumes on 5 August at 10:00 CEST with the women's 10m platform.
