The first week of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has come to an end with plenty of surprises, drama, tears, controversies, and, of course, some incredible displays of physical faculty and fine-tuning. Here are five takeaways from Day Seven at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Wins for Chinese badminton and a husband-to-be

China has topped the badminton medals table at the last six Olympic Games and today showed why taking the first possible gold in the Badminton Mixed Doubles.

Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong won the final in style thrashing top seeds Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun of South Korea  21-8, 21-11 in just 41 minutes having taken silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

For Huang Yaqiong, it was an extra special day as her boyfriend and Chinese men's doubles player Liu Yuchen, got down on one knee and proposed to Yaqiong minutes after receiving her Olympic gold medal.

A Wimbledon repeat awaits

Day Seven also witnessed the semi-finals in the tennis men's singles and the stars aligned to seal a Wimbledon repeat of young and old.

21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz thrashed Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 6-1 on Friday morning securing a spot in his third major final in just two months having won the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July.

Later in the day, 37-year-old Novak Djokovic beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-2 to extend his chance at getting his hands on a much-desired Olympic gold medal.

Djokovic, holder of a men's record 24 Grand Slam titles, has never won a gold or a silver at the Olympics with his best finish a bronze in Beijing in 2008.

The final, which will take place on Saturday, will see Djokavic attempt to redeem himself having lost the Wimbledon final to the young Spanish star in three sets in July.

A French favourite captivates crowds once again

Having won the Men's 400-metre Individual Medley on Sunday, Marchand then won two more gold medals in two hours on Wednesday in the Men's 200-metre Butterfly and the Men's 200-metre Breaststroke.

On Day Seven, the 22-year-old won the 200-meter Individual Medley capping a historic Olympic Games for the young Frenchman with his fourth gold medal and becoming just the fourth swimmer in history to win four individual gold medals at a single Olympics after Michael Phelps in 2008 and 2004, Kristin Otto in 1988 and Mark Spitz in 1972.

Crowds at the Paris La Défense Arena erupted as the new "king of the pool" won a historic fourth gold in front of President Emmanuel Macron. To make it even more impressive, all four of the 22-year-old's gold medals came in Olympic record times.

France gets revenge for the 2022 World Cup

In the men's football, the host nation got their revenge for the historic 2022 World Cup final which Argentina won on penalties after finishing extra time 3-3.

There has been added extra animosity between the two teams after a video was released in mid-July showing Argentina players singing a derogatory song about French players of African heritage after winning the Copa America.

Today proved to be another exciting showing between the two sides that are fast becoming bitter national team rivals. Crunching challenges, close chances, plenty of cards, and some controversial VAR decisions followed an early goal for France which eventually secured them a 1-0 win.

After the game, reports suggested that emotions had spilt over and mayhem unravelled in the tunnel as brawls broke out between players.

France will now take on Egypt in the semi-final on Monday with Euros winners Spain playing Morocco in the other semi-final.
