Saturday's session, which was dominated by the controversy surrounding Algerian boxer Amine Khelif, who won at least bronze after defeating Anna Luca Hamori, saw the semi-finals in various weight categories and the first final between Harrington and Derieuw in the women's -60kg category.

Imane Khelif stole the show in the Olympic boxing tournament after her participation sparked controversy because of her previous  disqualification from the last World Championships by the International Boxing Association. Her bout with Hungary's Hamori was the main event of the day and Khelif defeated her opponent 5-0. This secured her a bronze medal and a place in the semi-finals. The Algerian was overcome with emotion. She will meet Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand on Tuesday.

On Saturday, Kellie Harrington of Ireland defeated Beatriz Iasmin of Brazil 4-1 in the 60kg semi-final and will now compete in the final for gold against Wenlu Yang, from China, who beat Shih Yi by 5-0 in the other semifinal draw. The final is set for Tuesday.

It was late in the afternoon, but several matches had already taken place without too many surprises. Abdumalik Khalokov (Uzbekistan) and José Quiles (Spain) met in the opening bout of the 57kg category. The Spaniard was looking for his country's first boxing medal since Rafa Lozano won it in 2000. Spain has not won a medal since then. It was not to be. The Uzbek, the world's top-ranked boxer in his weight class, didn't let up in the quarter-finals and earned himself a bronze medal. Quiles put up a good fight but couldn't overcome Khalokov, losing 5-0.

Asadkhuja Muydinhhuyaev (Uzbekistan) also won a medal for his country in the 71kg category. He defeated Nikolai Terteryan (Denmark) 5-0. Uzbekistan reaffirmed their status as an Olympic boxing powerhouse, which they can continue to be after Paris 2024.

There was a surprise in the women's -66kg category when Navbakhor Kamidova (Uzbekistan) was defeated 5-0 by Chen Nien (TPE). The Chinese boxer was much more assertive. She managed to keep the right distance to score and avoid being hit.

One of the most exciting fights of the day was between Zeyad Eashash (Jordan) and Lewis Richardson (Great Britain). The British boxer won the fight 3-2. The GB Boxing team, who have brought six boxers to the Paris 2024 Olympics and invested heavily in their success, suffered a setback in the first round when four of their boxers were knocked out.

Richardson's victory is one of the best pieces of news for British boxing as it seeks to regain its former dominance and status. The bout had it all, constant exchanges, punches from both sides and gutsy boxing in pursuit of a semi-final spot that could secure a medal in the men's 71kg category.

France missed out on another medal opportunity. Wassila Lkhadiri (France) lost a close 3-2 decision to Aira Villegas (Philippines). Despite the support of the home crowd, she couldn't overcome the boldness of the Filipina, who was very mobile and adept at getting in close to score.
