South Korea's Kim Woo-jin won the gold medal in the men's individual archery final at Paris 2024 on Sunday 4 August. Thanks to a difference of just three millimetres in the tie-break he was able to beat the American Ellison Brady, who won the silver medal.

The Esplanade des Invalides was the stage chosen to name the champion. The Asian archer managed to beat his rival 6-5 after the so-called golden arrow had decided the title in his favour. The victory was Woo-jin's third gold medal at the Olympics after he also won the men's team and mixed team events.

The South Korean began by losing the first set 29-27 to a Brady who in the beginning was close to perfection. The second set brought the score back to level terms and in the next set it was the American who took the lead again. Woo-jin bounced back in the fourth round, taking advantage of a bad shot by his opponent, hitting 10 shots to make it 4-4 on aggregate and leave the competition open for the final leg.

With the gold medal in the air, both archers materialised in the fifth set a perfect game of 30 points each, which forced the use of the tie-break. It was there that the title was decided. Woo-jin shot first and hit a 10 just wide of the centre of the target. The American responded with the same result, but three millimetres short of the target, a distance that was enough for him to miss out on the top spot.

"I'm very happy to have made history," said Woo-jin after the event. "I didn't have any individual medals before this one. I'm really happy to have completed this puzzle. I knew I had to be really good in the tiebreaker because Ellison is capable of hitting the centre," he concluded.

The Asian athlete won his fifth Olympic medal, all of them gold, after winning the men's team competition at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. It is a record-breaking haul, making him the first archer to win that number of titles at Olympic level. In the process, he regained the crown for his country after Turkey's Mete Gazoz won in Tokyo.

In the bronze medal match, his compatriot Lee Wooseok beat Germany's Florian Unruh 6-0, who missed out on a medal. South Korea proved once again that they are still one of the major international powers in the sport.
