Spain managed to win men's Olympic football gold for the first time on Saturday since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as it beat host France 5-3 in extra time. In the women's tournament, it failed to claim bronze by falling 1-0 to Germany.

The match started with a goal by Enzo Millot in the 11th minute for the French side . However, the Spanish team did not give in to doubt, quickly recovered and began to dominate the match with great intensity and touch, tying the score with a goal in the 18th minute by Fermín López.

In the remainder of the first half, Spain continued to control the tempo and scored two more goals by Fermín and Alex Baena in the 25th and 28th minute, respectively, putting the home team in a very complicated situation.  France ended the first half with a two-goal disadvantage, from which they started to recover at the beginning of the second half as they began to dominate the game by putting pressure on the Spanish team.

France continued attacking but it was not until the 79th minute that Thierry Henry's squad  scored a goal tthrough Maghnes Akliouche that brought it back into the game. They kept attacking until they managed to force a penalty in the 90+3 minute, which Jean-Philippe Mateta converted, tying the match and taking it to extra time.

Despite the hit, Spain did not give up and continued to compete, scoring two goals in the 100th minute and in the 120+1, both by Sergio Camello.

With the gold medal, Spain reinforces its status as one of the major powers in current world soccer, having beaten France in an Olympic final at home just after winning the Euro Cup in Germany.

In the women's bronze medal match, Germany did beat Spain 1-0. The game was very evenly matched on both sides, with an initial superiority by the Spanish players, but they were not able to score a goal. After several shots by Teresa Abelleira and Aitana Bonmati that ended up hitting the posts, Spain was not able to take the lead.

Germany only managed three clear shots in the whole first half, ending in a tie score. However, in the second half, the German team suffered a foul inside the area that ended up turning into a yellow card for Cata Coll and a penalty for Germany. The penalty was taken by Giulia Gwinn, scoring it in the 65th minute and allowing the German team to take the lead.

After this, Spain tried to come back, but they were unable to score even in the 90+9th minute, when Lucia Garcia forced a penalty kick. Unfortunately for Spain, last year's Golden Ball winner, Alexia Putellas, shot the penalty into the goalkeeper's hands and Germany claimed the bronze medal.
