Para-Shooting: China, India and Serbia - in the spotlight

High-level action will be the focus of attention when the Shooting Para Sport competition kicks off on 30 August at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, a famous venue on the outskirts of Paris. The sport, which tests accuracy, concentration and control, first appeared at the Toronto Summer Paralympics in 1976.

13 Paralympic champions will be crowned and the world's best will compete for top honours. Asia is expected to dominate, with China, India, South Korea and Iran likely to be among the medal winners, not forgetting Serbia on the European side. China topped the medals table at the last Games, as they did at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year with same number of four gold medals. India and Iran followed to be in the top three.

China will have a strong presence in the rifle events with multiple Paralympic champion Dong Chao, Yang Chao and Zhang Cuiping ready to defend their Tokyo 2020 titles. Huang Xing, the Tokyo 2020 and Hangzhou 2022 P4 champion, should lead the way in pistol. Meanwhile, India will be hoping for a couple of medals with Paralympic champions Avani Lekhara (R2- 10m Air Rifle Standing) and Manish Narwal (P4- mixed 50m Pistol SH1).

Both have been in great form over the past year, securing top podium finishes at the 2023 World Championships in Lima and the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. However, 2023 saw the emergence of youngsters in the elite ranks, with Rudransh Khandelwal and Nihal Singh are ready to make a splash in their debut Paralympic Games. They showed promise last year with medals at the World Championships in Lima 2023 and Hangzhou 2022.

Mona Agarwal will also join Avani Lekhara in making India a strong medal contender in the rifle events. South Korea will have a number of names ready to make amends for their performance at Tokyo 2020. Veteran star Park Jinho is a silver medallist at both the Tokyo 2020 and Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games.

Hangzhou 2022 icons Lee Jangho (R1- men's 10m air rifle standing SH1), Lee Myungho (R4 - mixed 10m air rifle standing SH2) and Lima 2023 stars Kim Jungnam and Jo Jeongdu (pistol shooters) will also be hoping for a medal in Paris.

Veteran star and two-time Paralympic champion Abdullah Sultan Alaryani will once again lead the UAE's medal hopes in Paris, along with Sareh Javanmardi, the reigning Paralympic champion in the P2 - 10m Air Pistol SH1 who will lead Iran's Para shooting challenge. She will be in the spotlight after becoming a mother following her silver medal performance at Hangzhou 2022.

Serbia's Dragan Ristic won two golds at Tokyo 2020 in 10m air rifle prone and 40m rifle prone, where compatriot Zdravko Savanovic took silver. Philip Jönsson of Sweden (10m air rifle standing) and Germany's Natascha Hiltrop were the best in 10m air rifle prone, as was Slovakia's Veronika Vadovicova in 50m rifle prone.

China won four gold medals at Tokyo 2020 with Dong Chao (10m air rifle standing), Yang Chao (10m air pistol), Zhang Cuiping (50m rifle 3 positions) and Huang Xing (35m pistol). The other winners at the Olympic Games three years ago went to India's Manish Narwal (50m pistol) and Avani Lekhara (10m air rifle standing) and Iran's Sareh Javanmardi (10m air pistol
