World Rowing Championships: Best times and history made. WORLD ROWING

The penultimate day of racing at the 2024 World Rowing Senior, U23 and U19 Championships on Martindale Pond in St Catharines, Canada, saw the finals of the senior boat classes. Eleven nations won medals in six boat classes and all six titles went to different nations, according to World Rowing.

The first World Champions to be crowned were in the men's PR3 pair, as Italy's Luca Conti and Igor Zappa got off to a fast start to extend their lead over Japan. The lightweight single sculls finals were packed with Paris 2024 Olympians and reigning World champions.

In the women's lightweight single sculls, Romania's Ionela Cozmiuc ended her international career on a high note. After winning Olympic silver in the women's double sculls in Paris, she announced that this would be her last international race and will now retire with a gold medal. Silver went to Greece's Zoi Fitsiou and bronze to last year's champion, Ireland's Siobhan McCrohan.

The men's lightweight single sculls was also epic. All eyes were on Italy's Niels Torre after he set a new world record earlier in the week, but it was Greece's Antonios Papakonstantinou who came out fast and led for more than half the race. However, Ireland's double Olympic champion Paul O'Donovan worked his way through the field to add another title to his incredible record.

Poland's Jessika Sobocinska and Katarzyna Welna won the women's lightweight doubles with a new world best time and a World Championship best time. Peruvian twin sisters Alessia and Valeria Palacios took silver - their second World Championship medal. In the men's event, Austria's Konrad Hultsch and Paul Ruttmann won gold, while Paraguay's Matías Ramírez and Alberto Portillo took silver, the country's first World Championship medal.

More history was made in the final race of the day when Mexico won the lightweight men's quadruple sculls with José Navarro, Marco Antonio Velázquez, Miguel Carballo and Rafael Mejía - the nation's first ever World Championship title. Sunday 25 August is the final day of racing in St Catharines, Canada, and will be dedicated to the U19 boat classes.
