The third day at the Paralympics held yesterday, 31 August, left historic moments. World records were broken, new stars emerged and established athletes defended their titles. There were 51 gold medals awarded across athletics, swimming, track cycling, taekwondo, table tennis, archery, and shooting.

Three medals for Javanmardi

Sareh Javanmardi from the Islamic Republic of Iran claimed her third Paralympic title in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event on Saturday, adding a fourth gold to her collection of five Paralympic medals in Para shooting. "I am extremely happy to have won my fifth Paralympic medal. There's nothing that can match this, really," said Javanmardi. "I want to retire now. I think I will train my child to follow my lead.”

In the Men’s 10m Air Rifle SH1 final, Denmark’s Martin Black Joergensen seemed poised to cause an upset but lost his lead in the final shots, finishing third. Jinho Park from the Republic of Korea took first place, adding a gold to his Tokyo 2020 silver and bronze collection. "This was the only medal I was missing, so now I’ve achieved everything. I feel fulfilled," he said.

China wins inaugural gold in mixed doubles

Para table tennis in Paris introduced a new event on Saturday, with China’s Mao Jingdian and Zhao Shuai becoming the first-ever Paralympic gold medallists in mixed doubles, winning the XD17 event in straight sets. "When we teamed up, we didn’t have much time to train together, so I’m very grateful to my partner," said Mao. "We’ve played together for less than a year. I get anxious or angry sometimes when I play, and he calmed me down.”

Mao and Zhao faced their compatriots Peng Weinan and Xiong Guiyan in the final, marking another strong day for China at the South Paris Arena. Cao Ningning and Feng Panfeng won gold in the Men’s Doubles MD8, while Gu Xiaodan and Pan Jiamin secured gold in the Women’s Doubles WD10.

Drama at the Velodrome

The Men’s C4 4000m Individual Pursuit final ended dramatically, with Britain’s Archie Atkinson as the favourite. Atkinson, making his Paralympic debut, is the current world champion and broke the world record in the qualifying round.

However, a crash in the gold medal final forced Atkinson to settle for silver, as Slovakia’s Jozef Metelka claimed his second Paralympic gold, displaying great sportsmanship. “The first thing I wanted to do was to check on Archie. I was concerned about him and how he was doing. At first, I didn’t know if it was serious or not. Then I didn’t want to celebrate in front of him, of course,” said Metelka. "But once I knew he was okay, I celebrated, and I couldn’t believe I had just won the gold medal."

China’s Li Zhangyu and Liang Weicong replicated their Thursday results in the Men’s C1 3000m Individual Pursuit, with Li taking gold and Liang silver once again, this time in the C1-3 1000m time trial.

Grinham becomes first pregnant Paralympic medallist

Britain’s Jodie Grinham defeated compatriot Phoebe Paterson Pine in the bronze medal match of the Women’s Individual Compound Para Archery, becoming the first pregnant athlete to win a Paralympic medal. "I’m so proud of her because she has defied all odds to be here, especially with Bubba on the way," said Paterson Pine. "She’s due in October, I think. I’m very proud and impressed with how well she’s done."

The battle for gold in the Women’s W1 individual event was a repeat of Tokyo, with China’s Chen Minyi facing the Czech Republic’s Sarka Pultar Musilova. Once again, Chen took gold. "I was hoping not to have this rival in the final, but she was brilliant. She was shooting very well. So I congratulate her, and let’s see what comes next," said Musilova. Musilova was one of two Czech athletes on the podium, with Tereza Brandtlova taking bronze.

Final medals in Para taekwondo

The Paris 2024 Para taekwondo competition concluded on Saturday at the Grand Palais, where the final three gold medallists were decided. Great Britain’s Amy Truesdale won her first-ever Paralympic gold in the Women’s K44 +65kg, facing rising star Guljonoy Naimova of Uzbekistan in the gold medal match.

Great Britain’s second taekwondo gold of the day came from Matt Bush, who missed Tokyo 2020 due to injury. "To be honest, getting here is a miracle," said Bush. "I tore my ACL two weeks before Tokyo, was out for two years, and had two surgeries." Uzbekistan’s Asadbek Toshtemirov won gold in the Men’s K44 -80kg, defeating Mexico’s Luis Mario Najera 38-17.

Basiloff wins historic gold for Argentina

On Saturday, at the Paris La Defense Arena, the podium was filled with familiar faces and new medallists. Yip Pin Xiu continued her dominance in the pool, winning her third Paralympic gold in the Women’s 50m Backstroke S2. “I don’t take it for granted. We train really hard, day in, day out. I am sure everybody does the same, but it’s about finding that edge and getting a great team to work with us, so we can swim as fast as we can.”

Brazil’s Gabriel Geraldo dos Santos Araujo and Maria Carolina Gomes Santiago also added to their medal collections, with dos Santos Araujo in the Men’s 50m Backstroke S2 and Gomes Santiago in the Women’s 100m Backstroke S12. After two fourth-place finishes in Tokyo, Argentina’s Iñaki Basiloff finally made it to the podium, winning gold in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley SM7, the first Paralympic gold for Argentina in any sport since Rio 2016.

It was a day of many firsts for British swimmers, including a first Paralympic gold for Stephen Clegg, who topped the podium by setting a world record of 59.02 in the Men’s 100m Backstroke S12. "The main priority here is to make sure we prepare in the heats to win gold in the finals and not worry too much about the time," said Clegg. "It’s something very special when you can win gold with the world’s best time."

Track disappointments

In the T54 5000m finals, the reigning Paralympic champions in both the men’s and women’s events were dethroned. Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner defeated the USA’s Susannah Scaroni in the women’s final, setting a new Paralympic record to finish ahead of the defending champion and world record holder.

"It’s incredible. It was really hard to get ahead of Susannah. It was a tough race, but the crowd helped me,” said Debrunner. “Once I knew we were alone, I was really happy because I knew I was second or first. But then she went really fast for the last 600m, so I stayed behind her. Somehow I had some energy left at the end.”

In the Men’s T54 5000m, the USA’s Daniel Romanchuk denied Switzerland’s Marcel Hug the chance to win four golds at these Games, finishing ahead of the Para athletics legend. Fleur Jong defended her women’s T64 long jump title, breaking the Paralympic record not once, not twice, but three times.
