In the first bronze medal bout of the women's K44 -57kg category on Friday, taekwondo fighter Palesha Goverdhan faced Marija Micev from Serbia and emerged victorious to secure Nepal's first Paralympic medal. After finishing fifth at Tokyo 2020, she vowed to improve and has now achieved her goal.

It took the Nepalese some time to find her range and she seemed to struggle at times. However, she eventually found her rhythm. In the final minute of her match against Micev, she took the lead and secured the medal that had eluded Nepal for so long.

The joy in the Asian country was palpable. After the match, teammates and members of the Nepalese delegation rushed to embrace her. It was a historic moment for both Goverdhan and Nepal. Her coaches quickly joined her on the mat to hug Nepal's first Paralympic medallist.

Goverdhan wrapped herself in her country's flag. "It feels unreal," she said, still in awe after her incredible victory. "Most people dream. They don't put in the work and effort to make it happen. I did. I gave it my all, worked consistently. I was focused and disciplined," she said. "The dream I've been dreaming about since I was 10 years old finally became a real historic moment," she told Olympics.com.

She came close to winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games but finished fifth after losing in the bronze medal match. "It was my first time at the Paralympics," Goverdhan recalled. "I was only 18 at the time. I was still a rookie. I didn't know what it all meant. I didn't win a medal, but I fought really well," she said. The statements were collected by Paralympics.com.

At that moment, she promised herself that she would do better at the next Paralympic Games, and she did. She said: "When you lose, you don't want to see yourself crying. However, I knew it. It happened once and it will never happen again," she concluded.

Nepal had to wait decades, but it finally happened.
