Simone Biles a step closer to Paris as injuries rattle US Olympic trials

Simone Biles continued her march toward the Paris Olympics on Friday with a dynamic day one at the US gymnastics trials that featured brilliance and a little reminder that she's human, too. The four-time Olympic gold medallist thrilled the Target Center crowd with her signature Yurchenko double pike vault, now also known as the Biles II. She earned 15.975 points for the vault which no other woman has attempted in competition.

Skye Blakely is missing this week’s Olympic Trials after rupturing her right Achilles on Wednesday during practice. The 19-year-old top contender sustained the injury while practising a tumbling pass on floor exercise at the trial’s venue in Minneapolis. Blakely received medical attention and was later carried off the podium by staff, leaving the arena in a wheelchair.

The second and final stop of the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) concluded this weekend in Budapest with more than 150 athletes clinching their Paris Olympics berths in BMX freestyle, breaking, skateboarding and sport climbing. Over 450 athletes from more than 120 national federations competed in the popular urban sports to crowds of young spectators in the four-day, festival-style event.
