This marks the eighteenth time that the United States has topped the medal table at the Panam Games, the only exception being in 1991, when a meticulously prepared event in Havana led to a stellar performance by Cuban athletes, by the Cuban athletes, who won 140 gold medals to the United States' 130.

Brazil enjoyed a spectacular night of football on Saturday, with two major successes in different environments. It came after the women's national team were our of the Pan American Games due to a curious change in criteria, despite being reigning America's Cup champions and having secured a place at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Argentina arrived at the Pan American Games with the aim of defending the title they won in Lima four years ago, but with a team that bore little resemblance to that side of the past. In the Peruvian capital, the Albiceleste was able to call on the services of almost all their stars, including Facundo Campazzo, Gabriel Deck (Real Madrid, Spain), Nico Laprovittola (Barcelona, Spain), Nico Brussino (Gran Canaria, Spain), and even the legendary, now retired, Luis Scola.

Just as in the women's competition with champions Brazil, the men's handball competition at these Pan Am Games had a special prize for the winners: direct qualification for the Paris Olympics. 

The track and field competition at the Pan Am Games came to a close on Saturday,with the United States winning the medal count with eight gold medals, thanks to Curtis Thompson's triumph in the final event (men's javelin). His victory broke a seven-gold-medal tie between the USA, Brazil and Cuba.

On 20 October, the 19th edition of the Pan American Games kicked off in Santiago, Chile, concluding a long process that began in April 2017 when Buenos Aires withdrew its bid, leaving the Chilean capital as the sole candidate to host the event. 

The most anticipated final of the men's basketball tournament at the Panam Games was put on hold on Friday, as Brazil unexpectedly lost in the second semifinal to an excellent Venezuela, who dominated the first half to win 77-84.

With fewer fans in attendance at the Pan American Stadium in Nuñoa due to the women's football final and the men's handball and basketball semi-finals taking place at the same time, athletics had another remarkable penultimate day at the Pan American Games with several star performances.

Men's handball has been one of the standout events at the 2023 Panam Games in Santiago, Chile. The timing coincides with a break in club competitions in Europe, allowing for international team matches.

The iconic 'Ballon d'Or' has dominated headlines and online pages as Argentina's Leo Messi won it for the eighth time in history, extending his lead over his rivals. Spain's Aitana Bonmatí also secured the first win of her career.

After Brazil's victory in the women's competition, men's basketball enjoyed a thrilling third and final day of the group stage to set up Friday's semi-finals: Argentina-Mexico and Brazil-Venezuela.

Thursday saw the third day of track and field athletics at the Panam Games, with better weather than the day before and the presence of some stars who brought the passion to its peak. The event took place at the Julio Martínez Prádanos National Stadium in Nuñoa, northeast of Santiago de Chile.
