Skateboarding —along with surfing, its fellow Olympic newcomer— boosted the COVID-delayed Tokyo Games' viewership with brands eager to capture a share of the sport's youthful fan base. The urban sport is set to captivate a global audience once again with some of the youngest Olympians at the Paris Games.

The International Olympic Committee said it had no role in Dutch volleyball's decision to pick a convicted child rapist for the Paris Games: a selection criticised by several athlete advocacy organisations. Last month the Dutch Olympic Committee selected beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde —who was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl in 2014— to represent the country in the Olympic Games. 

Internationally renowned choreographer Alexander Ekman has been selected as Stage and Choreography Director of the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 that will see thousands of Para athletes from 180 international delegations parade down the legendary Avenue des Champs-Elysées to the Place de la Concorde on 28 August. Thomas Jolly, artistic director of the ceremonies, has brought in the Swedish choreographer to shake up the traditions of the event and Ekman has chosen to place dance at the heart of the show.

Dutch wheelchair tennis star Esther Vergeer has been awarded this year’s International Tennis Federation Philippe Chatrier Award at the ITF World Champions Awards at the Natural History Museum in London on Sunday. Vergeer is a seven-time Paralympic gold medallist and 21-time Grand Slam wheelchair singles champion and is often referred to as the most dominant player in wheelchair tennis history.

Sixteen-year-old Hezly Rivera will be heading to Paris this summer, as one USA Gymnastics five-woman team. Rivera, who turned 16 on 4 June, will be the youngest member of the team as she joins veterans 37-time Olympic and World medallist Simone Biles, reigning Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee, Olympic floor exercise gold medalist Jade Carey and Olympic team silver medalist Jordan Chiles. 

Reigning South African 400m champion Lythe Pillay booked a spot at the Paris Olympic Games last April after dethroning 2023 winner Wayde van Niekerk —the South African that has inspired Pillay to take on the international stage. 

Transgender and nonbinary runner Nikki Hiltz qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, clocking in a time of 3:55:33 in the women’s 1500m race at the US Olympic Trials Sunday: breaking Elle St. Pierre’s trials record of 3:58.03, set in 2021. Hiltz is not the first transgender non-binary person to compete at an Olympics  —Canadian football player Quinn, who competed at Tokyo 2020, was the first openly transgender and nonbinary athlete to participate and win a medal at the Games.
