Volleyball Australia apologises for "environment of fear"

Volleyball Australia issued a public apology on Thursday for creating an "environment of fear" that saw some players self-harm and others turn to substance abuse, with the impacts still felt decades later. The sport's governing body acknowledged that former athletes with the Australian indoor women's team, some as young as 14, were subjected to punitive training methods and body-shaming.

The International Olympic Committee said it had no role in Dutch volleyball's decision to pick a convicted child rapist for the Paris Games: a selection criticised by several athlete advocacy organisations. Last month the Dutch Olympic Committee selected beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde —who was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl in 2014— to represent the country in the Olympic Games.
