Baseball European Cup 2024 tips off today in Valencia

The Baseball European Cup 2024 tipped-off today in Valencia with a game between Austria’s Diving Ducks and Les Cougars Montigny of France in the Group B division. Eight top-level teams are set to compete for the European crown from 4-9 June: 2 teams from Spain, 2 teams from France, 2 teams from Austria, 1 team from Croatia and 1 team from Belgium.

Group A of the Men's Softball World Cup to be played from 12-16 June

Australia will open the competition in Hermosillo, Mexico against Venezuela. Immediately after the opening ceremony at the Fernando Ortiz Stadium, the hosts will take on the Czech Republic. The 2024 edition will feature 18 teams divided into three groups. The top two teams in each group will advance to the next stage.

WBSC celebrates ten years on World Baseball Day

The year 2024 holds special significance for international baseball, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) as a global governing body. In celebration of this milestone, the WBSC Executive Board has designated 10 May as the official World Baseball Softball Day.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
